Lots of people ask how to properly take care of woollen garments. Sometimes people worry that it is too much fuss because they are not machine washable. Worry not! It´s not complicated and it does not need to be hard work. Let me take you step by step.

Hola! Espero que hayan tenido un buen fin de semana.

Como muchas personas nos preguntan como se debe cuidar una prenda de lana, hoy vamos a ir paso a paso viendo cada momento. Que la prenda no sea lavable en lavarropas no hace que el cuidado sea muy complicado o trabajoso! Vamos entonces.

See below how water stays on the fibre but does not get absorbed? The reason for that is that wool fibre is resistant to water - and, therefore, stain resistant too. Most stains stay on the outside layer of the fibre, and it takes a lot to actually soil it.

En la fotografía se puede observar que el agua queda en la superficie de la prenda, y que es necesario empujarla para bajo para que se va mojando de a poco. Esto se debe a la resistencia de la lana al agua. Lo mismo pasa con las manchas: normalmente no llegan a penetrar la fibra, lo cual resulta en que la prenda no se ensucia tanto.

I usually use an ecoball to wash clothes and wools are no exception. But a mild detergent is fine too. Stay clear of detergents containing bleach and other whitening agents, though! If you can´t find one, hand-wash dish detergent or shampoo are great. Let it soak for a bit and, if needed (although it is very unlikely), gently rub to remove any stubborn stains.

Normalmente uso una ecobola para lavar ropa y las prendas de lana no son excepción. Pero cualquier detergente suave es adecuado, al paso que todos los que contengan lavandina u otros blanqueadores no son aconsejados. Si todo falla, un poco de detergente para lavar platos o incluso champú funcionan perfectamente. Dejo remojar un rato y, si necesario (lo cual es muy improbable), lavo suavemente alguna mancha más persistente.

Next step is to rinse it out and then add a bit of fabric softener. I usually combine fabric softener with apple cider vinegar, which works wonders. Let it soak for a while and then it´s ready to be rinsed. If you´re allergic to fabric softener, the vinegar on its own will do the trick - though the smell may not. Hair conditioner is a good solution too, specially for the rougher wools.

El paso siguiente es el suavizante. Combinado con un poco de vinagre de manzana, es aún más eficaz. En caso de alergias, el vinagre solo también suaviza; sin embargo, el olor no es tan rico. Otra alternativa es el condicionador para pelo.

Después de remojar un poco más, se enjuaga y pasamos a la próxima etapa.

To let your woollies dry, the best idea is to roll each of them into a dry towel and then - worry not - step on it to squeeze the water out of the wool and into the towel. This prevents any sort of rubbing, which can felt wool, and removes most of the water from it.

La mejor manera de secar una prenda de lana es enrollarla cuidadosamente en una toalla y luego - nada teman! - pararse encima de ella, para hacer salir el agua de las fibras de lana para la toalla. Así se evitan "accidentes" como el afieltrado indeseado!

The last step is to let the garment dry flat onto a dry portion of the towel. And that´s it!

El último paso es dejar que la prendita se seque sobre una porción seca de la toalla. Y ya está!

Things have been hectic, with all the business involved with moving to a new country. Air shipped cargo has safely arrived (with plenty of abbrigate* wool) but my very much missed sewing machine is still stored back in wintry Buenos Aires.

Hola, tanto tiempo! Con todo el tema mudanza hemos estado un poco lejos de este espacio. Hasta ahora nos llegó muy bien todo lo que vino por transporte aéreo (lanitas abbrigate* incluídas - lo que es esencial, es esencial!); pero la máquina de coser, junto con los demás bienes que vendrán por mar, siguen esperando su orden de salida de la invernosa Buenos Aires.

"Fwd: abbrigate*"

Hello everyone! We´re now blogging from Panama, after having completed our expansion to a new country. We´re expecting to give you some very exciting news soon regarding new designs and materials from the tropics. Sounds promising, doesn´t it?

But for now, we want to share one of the things we´re most proud of in the garments we hand-knit: their durability and resistance to wear and tear. We know that babies, in their first year, grow so much that they won´t fit into a Kimono or a Vestmono for longer than three months. And we also know that babies´ clothes may get a bit pricey, specially bearing in mind that they will only be used for a short period of time.

That´s why we encourage forwarding. Exactly, forwarding like you would forward an e-mail! It may sound funny but it´s actually very environmentally friendly and financially sound: once your baby has outgrown a garment, you can keep it for your next baby, of course, but you can also forward it to a friend of yours whose baby may use the clothes your baby outgrew. There you go!

As for our garments, you can rest assured they will look as good as knew when you pass them forward to your friends! One abbrigate* garment, two (or more) happy babies!

Hola a todos nuestros lectores! Acá estamos en Panamá, después de haber completado esta expansión para un nuevo país. Estamos muy contentas y deseosas de darles notícias sobre nuevos diseños y materiales tropicales en nuestra colección de productos abbrigate*. Suena promisor, no?

Por ahora queremos compartir con ustedes uno de los aspectos de nuestras prendas que más nos enorgullece: su resistencia al uso (intenso!) y su durabilidad. Todos sabemos que los bebés, especialmente en su primer año de vida, crecen muy rápido y que sus ropitas les sirven por periodos muy cortos. También sabemos que justamente estas prendas suelen ser bastante caras, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta de que pronto ya no les van a servir.

Es por eso que en abbrigate* nos gusta mucho la idea de "forwarding". Como un correo electrónico, saben? Cuando a tu chico el Baby Kimono (o cualquier otra prenda) ya no le sirve, pasala a otro bebé, ya sea tu próximo hijo o entonces el de tu amiga. Una idea simple y muy práctica, no?

Cuanto a nuestras prendas, podés estar absolutamente segura de que se van a ver lindas incluso después de ese uso tan intenso que tu bebé les dio. Un Vestmono, dos (o más) bebés felices!

It may seem like we´ve been quiet over here, but our facebook followers are aware of all the new things that are coming along here for abbrigate*. Our main piece of news is that we´re moving to Panama. And although it has a tropical climate, we´re not closing our business!

Fear not: our wizard-partner, Virgi, will be in charge of all the magic down here in Argentina and Billy will keep on designing and introducing exciting new products - and new materials! - to our shop.

We´re so excited about this! We are looking forward to showing you all the new designs we´re working on. In the meantime, we´ll leave you with some yarn photos. Who can resist these fantastic colours?

Podría parecer que estamos muy silenciosas por acá en abbrigate*, pero aquellos que nos siguen en facebook ya saben que tenemos unas cuantas noticias para compartir! La más importante es que nos vamos a mudar a Panamá, un país cuyo clima... ajem, tropical! Pero no se preocupen porque nuestra querida hechicera Virgi va a seguir tejiendo lindos abbriguitos para todos los nenes del mundo, mientras que Billy seguirá diseñando nuevas prendas y incorporando nuevos materiales a la oferta de productos.

It is designed for girls from ages 1 to 5 years old, perfect for using over a sweatshirt, during those chilly days of Spring - or Fall, in our case! The yarn used is 100% pure argentine merino, hand-dyed by ourselves.

We recommend hand-washing and flat drying before wearing and you´ll enjoy a warm, lightweight, breathable and water-resistant garment that will look good for years to come.

We´re happy to introduce our brand new model, the Baby Vestmono! It´s a variation of our classic Baby Kimono, ideal for the not-so-cold days due to arrive soon in Spring (up there in the north) and in the Fall, down here south.

It´s knitted with the same yarn as the Baby Kimono, which is a blend of the best argentine wool and a hypoalergenic synthetic fibre. It comes in the same vibrant colours as its "sibling", as well as two very exciting flavours: chocolate and lemon curd.

As we´ve written here before, abbrigate* was born as a fun and entrepreneurial project undertaken by two friends and partners, Joji and Billy. We started out having lots of work paired with lots of fun, learning new things about creating and running a small-scale business and, mostly, rejoicing with every single kimono shipped to a new home. Each knitted garment felt like an accomplishment, because we truly believe that handmade goods are special and unique.

But life takes its turns and it is with a kind of nostalgia mixed with happiness that we have to share with you that Joji, one of the wizards behind the brand and the designer of the Baby Kimono, had to part ways with us. We´re sad to see our friend and business partner leave - doing business with Joji was fun! - but we´re happy to know she´s now fully focusing on her ongoing projects.

So, as sad as we feel to see our partner leave, we´re happy to know she´s happy and... well, she is always around when help or advice are needed. Cheers to you, Joji!

Ya habíamos mencionado acá que abbrigate* nació como un emprendimiento de dos amigas y socias, Joji y Billy. Comenzamos esta aventura con mucha alegría y también mucho trabajo, aprendiendo con cada etapa de nuestro proyecto y, sobre todo, viviendo con mucha emoción la confección y venta de cada una de nuestras prendas. De cada vez que salía de nuestras manos un nuevo Kimonito, sentíamos una ilusión muy grande porque realmente creemos que las prendas hechas a mano son especiales.

Pero la vida tiene sus cosas y es con mixto de nostalgia y también de felicidad que les contamos que Joji, una de las hechiceras de nuestro cuento y la diseñadora de los Baby Kimonos, tuvo que dejarnos. A pesar de tristes por su partida, estamos muy contentos porque sabemos que ahora Joji puede concentrar toda su energía en sus proyectos.

Y, por suerte, siempre está disponible para ayudarnos, así que felicidades para vos, Joji!

Hi everyone! We had a short blog-break here at abbrigate* due to a short trip to Rio de Janeiro. The weather was lovely and warm, very warm, too warm even to think about knitting, but the knitting-bug bit anyway.

As we´ve mentioned before, we´re developing a new design for older kids, which we hope to be launching very soon. We´ll be using a new yarn called Big Merino, custom dyed by Joji specially for us. It´s 100% argentine merino wool, super soft and bulky weight.

Exciting news, right? Can´t wait to share more with you. In the meantime, have a great week and thank you for stopping by!

Hola a todos, después de esta cortita pausa en el blog. Anduvimos viajando por tierras bien veraniegas, donde solamente pensar en tejido nos hacía transpirar. Sin embargo, como todos sabemos, el tejido es un camino de ida y no pudimos dejar de tejer un poco, a pesar de la altísima temperatura. Así que el prototipo de nuestro nuevo modelo está casi listo. Para este nuevo diseño vamos a usar una lana especialmente teñida por Joji, integralmente compuesta por lana merino argentina, muy suave y de altísima calidad.

Por acá, hay muchas ganas de compartir el nuevo modelo con ustedes, así que vuelvan pronto!

Spring is here! Soon we´ll have some exciting news to share, but until then, let us tell you that a new design is now being "baked" by the wizards at abbrigate*. Above is a quick preview of our work.

We´re so anxious about launching this new garment because it will cater for toddlers and pre-schoolers, which means that we´ll be able to share the abbrigate* love with more people.

Se viene la Primavera! Muy pronto tendremos novedades para contarles, pero por ahora levantamos un poquito el misterio contandoles que estamos elaborando un nuevo modelo para chicos un poquito más grandes, hasta los 3 años. Esto nos hace muy felices, porque hasta este momento solo podíamos "abbrigar" a bebés hasta los 6 meses y muy pronto podremos compartir el cariño de nuestras prendas con chicos más grandes.

Many people believe that a knitted garment is nothing more than a knitted garment. For the "wizards" inside us, a knitted garment is an intricate mesh that holds in its fibers not only colour, but also feelings and molecules of the places they´re knitted in. All these different elements are combined and influence the final look of a garment.

That´s why we enjoy taking our knitting outside, enjoy beautiful urban parks or take it along when travelling. Somehow, I believe that every garment is a sum of its parts and something else: the love and care we insert in every single stitch.

It shows in our Kimonos, doesn´t it?

Para mucha gente, una prenda tejida es nada más que una prenda tejida. Para nosotras, "hechiceras" de profesión y devoción, una prenda tejida es una colección de sensaciones, lugares y moléculas que se fijan en los puntos que tejemos y que terminan influenciando su aspecto final. Por lo tanto, tejer en otros lugares además de nuestras casas les confiere a los kimonitos (y a nuestros tejidos personales) un carácter totalmente distinto de una prenda hecha masiva e industrialmente.

Siempre que tejo algo, pienso en la persona que va a usar la prenda y trato de impregnar cada punto con cariño; si me impaciento con el tejido - cosa que a veces también pasa - lo dejo un ratito y me voy a hacer otra cosa, para retomarlo cuando haya recuperado la tranquilidad.

Se nota el cariño puesto en nuestros Kimonitos, no?

The embroidering / Los bordados

We realised we hadn't shown pictures of our emboridered kimonos... This week we had to deliver two Baby Kimonos to a baby girl who hasn't been born yet, and when we embroidered them, we took some pictures for you to see.
We do our embroiderings with a freehand technique. This means that we embroider without a model to follow, as if we were writing with a pencil. We believe in the uniqueness of our products, and this is a way to make sure that even when we embroider twice the same name, a Baby Kimono will never look like another one.

Hasta ahora no habíamos mostrado fotos de nuestros kimonos bordados... Esta semana tuvimos que entregar dos Baby Kimonos a una pequeñita que todavía no nació y al bordar su nombre aprovechamos para sacar fotos.
Hacemos nuestros bordados a mano alzada. Esto quiere decir que vamos bordando sin un modelo para seguir, como si estuviéramos escribiendo con un lápiz. Creemos en los productos únicos, y esta es una manera de asegurarnos que incluso bordando dos veces el mismo nombre, un Baby Kimono nunca será igual a otro.

Labelling our products | Etiquetas

Products need labels. Some are very sophisticated, like barcodes, some are very handmade, like ours. Labels exist mainly to convey basic information to a product´s user.

When designing our labels at abbrigate*, we wanted to keep it simple, ecological and fuss-free. Our labels are printed on partly recycled paper and attached to the garment with a cotton thread looped around a button. No scissors are needed to tear it apart!

Our labels tell mammas (and daddies!) they´re holding a unique handmade garment in their hands. Each piece is numbered and tracked by us to ensure it made it to its new home in perfect conditions. Washing and care information complete what we believe are basic informative elements.

Why Wool? / Por qué lana?

Maybe it's time to talk about why we chose wool and not other fiber for our first designs for abbrigate*.
Wool has a lot of properties that make it stand out from other materials:
It's a very resistent and durable fiber, but it behaves in an elastic way, adapting to the baby's little body and movements. It's almost impermeable unless it's inmerse in water. It's much more resistant to stains than cotton fabrics. Wool can keep a baby really warm, even when it's wet. It takes dyes beautifully and you can get really saturated bright shades which last even if the garment is washed a lot or exposed to sunlight.
But also, it's a renewable, sustainable resource, not pollutant and biodegradable.

These are enough reasons to choose it as first option, aren't they?

La lana tiene muchas propiedades que la hacen destacarse de otros materiales:
Es una fibra muy resitente, pero que se comporta de manera elástica acomodándose al cuerpito y a los movimientos de los bebés. Es prácticamente impermeable a menos que esté sumergida. Es mucho más resistente a las manchas que una prenda de algodón. La lana puede mantener a un bebé realmente abrigado, incluso estando húmeda. Toma los colores de una manera bellísima y se pueden obtener tonos muy intensos y brillantes resistentes a los lavados y a la luz solar.
Pero además es un recurso renovable, sostenible, no contaminante y biodegradable.

Suficientes razones para elegirla como primera opción, no?

I´m reading a book called "The wool and the snow", by Ferreira de Castro, one of Portugal´s 20th century literature classics.It was published in 1947 and tells the story of Horácio, a young man who is a shepherd near Manteigas, a country town near Portugal´s Serra da Estrela. This region is historically known for its wool industry and bitterly cold weather, which are the backdrop to the portrait of communities who lived in great hardships and worked extremely hard to make a meager living.

In the book, an interesting procedure, directly related to the production of wool, is described. Since most of us, urbanites, have probably never seen or heard about this, it was surprising for me to learn that ram´s horns must be shaped in order to protect the animal from piercing itself and others. The author describes the process, which appears to be painless for the animal: each horn is inserted into a boiled potato, still hot from the pot. The warmth and humidity contained within the potato soften the horn, which is then flexible enough to be reshaped, so that it does not pierce the animal´s eyes or neck. Who knew that? Not me, certainly!

Estoy leyendo un libro llamado "La lana y la nieve", del autor portugués Ferreira de Castro, uno de los precursores del neo-realismo y un clásico de la literatura del siglo XX. El libro, publicado en 1947, cuenta la historia de Horácio, un joven pastor de un pueblo serrano del interior de Portugal, conocido por su producción lanera. En el libro se cuenta no sólo su historia sino que también se describe la vida difícil de su gente.

A pesar de mi pasión por el tejido y por la lana, la verdad es que como urbanita que soy no sabía que A los carneros jóvenes hay que amoldarles los cuernos para que no lastimen. En el libro describen el proceso: con cada cuernito se pincha una papa hervida. La humedad y el calor de la papa suavizan el cuerno lo suficiente para que se vuelva flexible y se pueda cambiar su forma. ¿Quién hubiera dicho?

The launch of abbrigate was a surprise for us, because we immediately received a lot of orders! That meant that our project was a success, but also that we had to get knitting a lot. We realised that we were going to need another “wizard” with knitting powers to help us, so we went to Joji’s mom, who happily offered to help.
The problem was that since we are very careful with detalis, we saw that her knitting was a bit looser than ours… And we wanted all the kimonos to look the same! So we went out hunting for some super-special knitting needles so that her tension is the same that ours… And thay were so hard to find that we had to order them in the United States. So the help is on the way!

El lanzamiento de abbrigate fue una sorpresa, porque inmediatamente recibimos muchos pedidos! Eso significaba que nuestro proyecto era exitoso, pero también que había que ponerse a tejer mucho. Nos dimos cuenta de que íbamos a necesitar a otra “hechicera” con poderes tejeriles para ayudarnos, y recurrimos a la mamá de Joji, que se ofreció contenta.
El problema fue que como somos muy atentas a los detalles, vimos que ella tejía un poco más flojito que nosotras… Y queremos que los kimonos queden todos iguales! Así que salimos en busca de unas agujas de tejer super-especiales para que su tensión quede igual que la nuestra… Y tan difícil fueron de conseguir, que hubo que encargarlas en Estados Unidos. Así que la ayuda está en camino!
